Chapter 6
The baby kicked me awake. There was something he wanted me to know. I glanced at the bedside clock. It read exactly midnight. Goosebumps ran up and down my arms, as I fought to clear the sleep from my eyes. A tall dark shape moved in the half-light of the moon that streamed through the tiny panes of glass. I reached to Darcyâs side of the bed to alert him to an intruder. He wasnât there!
The figure moved stealthily towards the bed. I did the only thing I could think of in my groggy stateâI picked up the clock and pitched it with all my might at the hulking form. Surprisingly I hit the skulker spot-on, which was not easy from my semi-recumbent position. The missile bounced off the intruderâs noggin with a thud. The shadow swore in a voice that sounded a lot like my dear husband.
I shanât repeat his exact words, but it was Darcy and he was more than a little peeved. Switching on the nightstand lamp I saw him standing near our bed, rubbing his head, and looking like he was anticipating a migraine. He was dressed in his black rock climbing togs, which elicited his resemblance to a hunky ninja.
Once Darcy had calmed down from the thunk on his head, I asked about his odd attire. âYou shouldnât creep around in the dark!â I said by way of an apology. âWhatâs with the outfit? Have you taken up burglary?â Upset from being frightened half out of my wits I didnât think to acknowledge the damage I had done to his handsome brow.
âYou do realize that hurt?â he snapped.
âYou are lucky I only clocked you! Do you have a midnight rendezvous? Is it dangerous?â I asked, following my question with a tender apology when I saw the lump forming on the side of his head.
âYou have aroused my interest in your little ghost,â he said, rubbing the red bump. âI thought to plant our nanny cam in the parlor and remove the lid from the ottoman. Letâs capture the source of the chill you are feeling on camera. It will put your mind at ease. You have obviously seen something, for you are not inclined to invent tall talesâthe occasional little white fib, but not tall tales.â
âSo you do believe me!â I grabbed my robe from the foot of the bed and slipped it on. âIâm coming with you!â
Darcy gave me one of his bossy looksâthe kind I choose to ignore. âThere are no such things as ghosts, not at Pemberley. Now stay in bed. You might catch a chill.â
I listened to him like I always do and sat up on the edge of the bed. Slipping on my heavy walking shoes, which clashed horribly with my robe, I tagged after him. We both stumbled over Boris who was in a deep sleep just outside our doorway. His borzoi nose swung in a one-eighty as he awakened to the possibility of danger. He jumped to attention on those long legs of his, ready to march into battle to protect me.
